Electrocoagulation uses electricity instead of chemical reagents to remove soluble and colloidal contaminants from wastewater and process water. The technique is applied in industries as chemicals, metal, textiles, food, cardboard and paint.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1765810319884{padding-top: 16px !important;padding-bottom: 16px !important;}&#8221;]Industrial scale electrocoagulation was first used around 1900 for treatment of ship bilgewater. In the following decades, the technique was applied increasingly for different wastewaters. An important driver was that this technique removes various contaminants simultaneously in one single step. Electrocoagulation is attractive because the technology usually works without chemicals, is technically simple and robust and systems are compact and easy to automate.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Electrocoagulation works with sacrificial iron and\/or aluminum anodes. These are placed in a reactor through which the contaminated water flows. Direct current is applied to the electrodes, normally 5-10V, and the anode will release ions into the water. These ions form hydroxides that, like in classical water treatment, bind contaminants creating flocs that float or settle. This process is quick: often the residence time in the reactor is not more than 20 minutes. Morselt normally uses a chamber filter press that concentrates contaminants into the smallest possible volume of filter cake.
